Welcome to My Teacher's Pet!
This is an idea from someone who loves education, and what it does for the world. The goal of this website is to be an information hub where teachers can get ideas, trade suggestions and simply learn tricks of the trade from one another. I had a teacher in University who always said "you don't have to reinvent the wheel". She stressed to my class that a lot of things you add to your teaching portfolio are from begging and borrowing. The longer I stay in the classroom, the more validity this statement has. Maybe you have seen a teacher with
his/her students totally engaged, and have wondered, "what are they doing?" Or perhaps your child comes home stating some amazing fact and thought, "how did you learn that?" This air of curiosity usually leads us down the road of searching and researching. I have a special interest in this within St. Maarten and the Caribbean because it is so difficult to find information and texts that relate directly to our students. We spend our time teaching from material that doesn't tell "their" story.
Whether you get your information from a direct teaching source or from teachers on the internet or teachers who have written books, we are all "begging and borrowing" ideas that work and that will be beneficial to our learners. Many teachers are doing such great works in their classroom but don't ever get recognized or sometimes are not able to share some of their everyday revelations. My teacher's Pet will be like an inside look into someone
else's classroom. And let's be real here, as educators we always hear these stories of the perfect kids, or the teachers who seem to always get it right, it's as if they woke up with fairy dust sprinkled on their fingers.
The reality is teaching is hard work. It means being persistent, being dedicated, being reflective, being patient..things that we don't always feel up to 24/7. I want teachers to be real. Teaching is a rewarding profession, but we all have struggles, let this be a place to constructively talk about our challenges, while acknowledging the struggles of our peers. Even teachers who have been in this profession for ages and have acquired best practices always have room for additional growth. It's part of our profession..lifelong learning! So with all this in mind, keep your eyes on my teacher's pet, a helping hand for those who choose to teach.
