We have recently opened a new year and although we are in the same school year, it feels like a chance to begin anew, a fresh start. Well, it is! Here are a few tips and tricks to start your “new” year.
Tips Time management in the classroom
Organization is key. There should be a place for everything and everything in its place. Having an organized classroom helps save time in so many ways. Use labeled folders, plastic storage containers, shoe boxes and baskets. Once the containers are labeled, students will put the materials where they belong.
While you’re at work, work! Use every minute of time, whether you are waiting for a meeting to start or while another teacher is giving a lesson in your classroom, there is always something to be done.
Smart Transitioning We all have those moments when our class is transitioning from one lesson to another; some students are ready within a minute, while others take 5 minutes. While transitioning, place a simple review exercise related to the subject on the board so that those students who are ready will not get idle and distracted which will result in even more time to get everyone ready for the lesson.
If you find yourself running to the office or copy room 4 to 5 times a day you will want to compile as much of the material you need to copy in one place and make 1 trip to the office.
Isn’t it just annoying when... You find that you’re missing a grade for a student for an assignment from 3 weeks ago. You can save time and frustration by using a large, hanging calendar to note down assignments that absent students have missed. Make students responsible for checking the calendar when they return from an absence. Place any handouts, letters, and test books near the calendar so students can access them easily.
